WRAP cites continued increase in MRF gate fees

WRAP has released the results of its 17th annual gate fees survey. The survey covers gate fees charges to local authorities in the UK for a range of municipal waste recycling, recovery and disposal options.

It aims to highlight recent trends and emerging themes for such contracts and services with the aim of helping local authorities better understand the current situation and plan for future services and contracts.

A significant theme in the report is the expected impact of the expansion of the UK Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). The expansion was cited as the most common reason for anticipated future changes in energy from waste (EfW) gate fees and the fifth most common for non-hazardous landfill (NHLF) gate fees.

WRAP’s findings on annual gate fees

The report highlights that meridian Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) gate fees have continued to increase in keeping with trends seen in previous surveys.

The gate fee charged for treatment by Anaerobic Digestion (AD) has increased from 2022-23 whilst the NHLF gate fee has decreased.

The gate fees charged for in-vessel composting (IVC) have changed depending on the input material with ‘mixed food & green waste’ and ‘food waste only’ increasing while ‘green waste only’ decreased.

This edition has introduced new categories for EfW gate fees to gauge whether these would differ based on the inclusion of waste containing Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). The report concluded that gate fees marginally increased due to the change.

Gate fees webinar

WRAP will be hosting a free webinar on 26 September 2024 at 11:00am for those interested in understanding the report’s findings further.

The session will also guide local authorities on how they can apply the data to help make informed decisions and will include a Q&A and feedback session.
