On Monday last week (14 October 2024), WRAP went down to Downing Street to deliver a letter to prime minister Keir Starmer.
The letter highlighted that incorrect recycling could be leading to an extra one billion items being incinerated or ending up in landfill.
In particular, the letter highlighted that yoghurt pots, cleaning product bottles, aerosols, toilet roll tubes, and aftershave and perfume bottles are often incorrectly thrown into residual waste.
The characters have been brought to life using five mascots: Dee Dee the deodorant, Rey the plastic trigger spray, Yogi the yoghurt pot, Fitz the perfume bottle and Hube the toilet roll tube.
The characters feature in the board game where children will be able to play one of the characters and move their way around the board avoiding hazards that could land them in a landfill, or spark up the incinerator.
“The Rescue Me Game” is designed to be played in classrooms and teaches the importance of recycling to turn items into hundreds of new products – from park benches to sports fleeces. Aimed at ages seven to 11, the game can be downloaded here.
Speaking ahead of the trip to Downing Street, Dee Dee the deodorant said: “Recycling takes the pressure off the planet by ending the need to drill for more fossil fuels or precious metals. And recycling isn’t just about making more packaging. I love a good chat and want to come back as a mobile phone – when I’m done deodorising my owner. Hube would love to be more well-read, as a book but sadly, all too often, our dreams are quashed and we just become rubbish. Doomed to landfill or incineration. So please, Rescue Me – RECYCLE!”
