Tributes paid after death of Nick Mann, former letsrecycle journalist

Former letsrecycle.com journalist Nick Mann has died in the wake of an accident at London’s Old Street station on Sunday.

He died rescuing his brother Robert, 32, from the path of an oncoming tube train shortly after midnight on Saturday. Cameras later showed that Nick appeared to be trying to help save Robert, who may have dropped his wallet or mobile phone on the track and was trying to retrieve it.

An underground train entering the station hit Nick, 35, who later died at London’s Royal Free Hospital. His brother is reported as stable but critical at the same hospital.

Nick spent nearly four years with letsrecycle.com from 2008 to 2011 and covered a range of topics, from recycling rates, the development of plastics recycling and gave early coverage to Eric Pickles’ views of recycling. He especially enjoyed covering developments in Greater Manchester, with Manchester being where he previously worked for the city council and also studied. He covered the Viridor Laing contract in detail as well as following the SITA UK contract appeal over the project.

His colleagues and friends have paid tribute to him on social media and in the press.

Steve Eminton, editor of letsrecycle.com, said: “This is a truly tragic event and our thoughts and prayers go out to all his family and especially to his brother at this difficult time.

“Nick was a credit to journalism, an excellent and precise writer. He was a team player, enjoyed our annual football tournaments and always brought a sense of life and humour to the office. We will miss him.”

Caelia Quinault, associate editor of letsrecycle.com, said: “I cannot believe the terrible news. Nick was one of the nicest people I have ever worked with or known. He was funny, warm, passionate and kind. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and family.”

Another former colleague of Nick’s, Will Nichols, news editor of Business Green, wrote: “So terrible to hear former colleague and all-round great guy Nick Mann is no longer with us. RIP.”

Phil Conran of 360 Environmental and chair of the Advisory Committee on Packaging, said: “I was shocked to hear about Nick and especially of the tragic circumstances of his death. He was one of those people you were just happy to talk to when he worked at letsrecycle and always came across as a really nice guy who was very clued up. Sincere condolences to his family and colleagues.”
