Senior members of the waste management industry met recently in London at an annual reunion lunch for the trade association which preceeded today’s Environmental Services Association.

The event, held at the Army and Navy Club, saw representatives of today’s industry meet with retired colleagues who were involved with the National Association of Waste Disposal Contractors (NAWDC). The association was formed in 1968 and went on to become the Environmental Services Association in 1996.

Centriforce appoints technical manager to boost innovation

Independent plastics recycler Centriforce Products has appointed Adrian Davenport as technical manager to focus on new product development and introduction as part of the companys business expansion programme.

Mr Davenport will be based Centriforces Liverpool recycling and manufacturing centre and has more than 20 years experience in polymer and materials technology.

He joins Centriforce from Durapipe UK, where he was Innovations Manager for more than six years. Before that, he worked at Rubber and Plastics Research Association.

Cawleys raises 2,500 for charity in cycle challenge

A team of employees from Luton-based waste and recycling firm Cawleys has undertaken a gruelling three day cycle challenge in France, covering 500 miles, to help raise over 2,500 for CHUMS Child Bereavement and Trauma Service.

CHUMS is a social enterprise which offers support to young children and their families following the death of someone special. Cawleys first took up the cycle challenge five years ago when eight members of staff competed in the Extra Mile event. However during the event, a 43-year-old male employee from Cawleys collapsed and died. He left behind a wife and two young children.

Commenting on behalf of the latest cycling team at Cawleys, Matt Burton, key account manager, said: While we all became aware of CHUMS through devastating circumstances, we feel that it is only fitting to continue with our cycle challenge and raise the much needed funds for the organisation that helped our colleagues family deal with the anguish during such difficult time.

Stephen Wise joins Recydia

Dr Stephen Wise has been appointed as international business development and technology director at Recydia – the waste and energy division of Cemintir Holding.

In additionto being on the board of Recydia,Dr Wise is also onthe board of Neales Waste Management as the company’s business development and technology director.

Neales wasacquired by Recydia earlier this year. Dr Wise joined the company in October 2012. He previously worked as technical director for waste management firm Shanks.

Neales operates a number waste and recycling facilities, including landfill, waste transfer stations and haulage depots includingin Lancashire.

Waste entrepreneur named Businesswoman of the Year

Manchester entrepreneur Emma Elston, co-founder of repair and refurbishment firm UK Container Maintenance, has been named as the 2012 Businesswoman of the Year.

The announcement was made during the recent 30th annual Women of the Year Luncheon and Awards at the Birmingham Metropole. 36-year-old Mrs Elston started the business, which provides waste container refurbishment services, with her husband in 1998. The firm has since expanded into a national operation, employing over 80 staff. It refurbishes around 78,000 waste containers every year.

Commenting on why Mrs Elston won, Judy Groves, the awards chair, said: Her business is innovative and she is focussed on generating employment in her region. To accomplish what she has done, and to have done it during one of the worst economic climates we have ever experienced, is truly inspirational.

Smart Solutions appoints sales and marketing manger

Smart Solutions has promoted recruitment and business development manager Michelle Mallet to the role of national sales and marketing manager.

In her new role, Ms Mallet will be responsible for the companys sales and marketing function across the UK. Based at the firms south Wales headquarters, she will drive growth, manage the sales team and raise the profile of Smart Solutions network of 36 recruitment and outsourcing service centres across the UK.

Nathan Bowles, chief executive of Smart Solutions, said: Michelles appointment to national sales and marketing manager is only natural; the experience she has already brought to the team has played a crucial part in our recent growth. With Michelle in her new role I believe our growth will accelerate further, while continuing to set industry benchmarks for customer service and in-depth understanding of our clients business needs.

Recolight chief exec named Lux Person of the Year

Nigel Harvey, chief executive of WEEE compliance scheme Recolight, has been named the Lux Person of the Year 2012.

The Lux Awards ceremony, organised by Lux magazine and the Lighting Industry Association, took place at the Natural History Museum on November 6. They celebrate and reward creativity and sustainability in lighting.

Commenting on his award, Mr Harvey said: I am absolutely delighted to have been given this award which I dedicate to the team at Recolight, our members, collection points and partners, all of whom work tirelessly to keep this hazardous waste stream out of landfill. It is a great accolade for the lighting industry as a whole that we are leading the way when it comes to the management of business waste electrical and electronic equipment.
