Official draw for 2015 Waste World Cup announced

With the English football season now in full swing teams from across the waste sector are gearing up for the industry’s premier sporting event, the 2015 Waste World Cup in association with Mick George.

Reigning champions Wybone have been handed a tough start to the competition following the draw made earlier this week – having been pitted against Viridor Athletic, Veolia, SAICA Natur and Bywaters in Group B.

The Mick George team is hoping to banish memories of its penalty shootout defeat in last year’s final – they have been drawn against Fairport Containers, FCC Environment, Viridor and GET Solutions in the group stage.

The teams will meet at the University of Northampton’s Park Campus next Friday (September 4).

Group stage draw:

Group A Group B Group C Group D
Fairport Containers Viridor Athletic FCC Environment Blue Urbaser
Mick George Veolia Taylor Bins Resource Futures
FCC Environment Green SAICA Natur Grundon Valpak
Viridor Town Wybone B&M Waste Services UKCM
GET Solutions Bywaters Sharpsmart Biffa

Support will come from the Mick George Cheerleaders, who will be cheering all of the teams on when they take to the field to be crowned champion in what is now the 13th edition of the industry one-day, mixed gender, six-a-side tournament.

Finalists

Ian Phillips, commercial waste Manager at Mick George Ltd said: “The event has created a little banter around the office of late since the squad was announced. I understand the team captain is keen to go one further after falling short in a tense penalty shootout in last year’s final.

“We must not forget the day has a real purpose. It provides a great networking opportunity and serves to raise funds for the PODS Charitable Trust. For over 35 years, the PODS Charity has been bringing music, fun and laughter into the lives of over 20,000 children in hospitals each year to relieve distressing situations.”

Players will also have a chance to win individual prizes of £100 by taking part in any one of three challenges including the Crossbar Challenge – sponsored by Ceris Burns, Mick George’s ‘Chip in the Skip’ competition – where the prize also includes a signed Peterborough United shirt, and Taylor Bins’ famous ‘Wheelie Bin Challenge’.

Each participant will also enjoy a barbecue lunch and have access to the subsidised charity bar.
