Novati acquires Blue Castle’s waste collections service

Waste broker and resource consultancy Novati says it has acquired fellow Newark-based business Blue Castle Business Services’ waste collection service for an undisclosed amount.

Novati has purchased the contractual agreements Blue Castle had with customers for waste collection services and not the business itself.

Founded in 2002, Blue Castle is a consultancy which offers waste management and energy procurement services to customers in the healthcare, leisure and hospitality sectors.

The company’s waste collection service has a portfolio of around 200 customers, Novati says, ranging from schools and academies through to care homes and hotels.

Blue Castle provided their customers with wheelie bins and compactors and mostly collected residual waste, dry mixed recyclables and glass, Novati says, though they also have a number of customers who require clinical waste collection services.

Max Kanda, Novati’s managing director, said: “There are some incredible synergies in the mindset and approach of both Blue Castle and Novati.

“Not only do we operate in similar customer sectors, but our offices are also located within a couple of miles of each other.

“We’re excited to welcome our new customers and teammates into the group during such an exciting time for our business.”

A spokesperson for Novati told letsrecycle.com the acquisition happened quickly, taking just four days to complete.

‘Challenges and opportunities’

Blue Castle employs 40 members of staff across its head office and PVC recycling plant in Long Bennington, Lincolnshire.

The Novati spokesperson told letsrecycle.com that there were just three employees who could have transferred to their company from Blue Castle, due to “ongoing restructuring” at the latter business in recent months. One has opted to join Novati, the spokesperson said, and the other two have “decided to explore new careers in completely different industries”.

Marie Harley, Blue Castle’s CEO, said her company had created a business with “a passion for disruption” and “a vision to shake up the world of waste and utilities”.

She said: “The pandemic and geopolitics have presented us with many challenges and opportunities, but it hasn’t dampened our passion or enthusiasm for all things sustainability.

“Now’s the right time for us to concentrate our efforts on other aspects of the Blue Castle Group and hand over the responsibility for waste management to Novati.”

Consultancy

Novati is the trading name of UK Waste Solutions, a resource management consultancy founded in 2003.

With offices in Newark and Kings Lynn, Novati says it has a turnover of £60 million and 138 employees, of which around 40% have been with the company for three years or more.

In a statement, the company said the acquisition of Blue Castle’s waste portfolio “further strengthens Novati’s offering in key customer sectors in which it already operates”.

Novati also acquired Norfolk-based skip hire firm AMA Waste in October 2021 and Rugby-based Managed Waste Solutions (MWS) in October this year (see letsrecycle.com story).
