With news on: Berry makes bottle from 100% recycled plastic; Amazon replaces plastic air pillows; and Aldi trials paper-band banana packaging.

Berry makes bottle from 100% recycled plastic

Berry Global Group has launched a customisable, rectangular ‘Domino bottle’ that it has said is made from “100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic”.

According to Berry Group, the Domino bottle is fully recyclable where appropriate collection schemes exist.

Joe Horton, sales and marketing director, said: “In a retail environment where consumers are influenced by how brands are presented on-shelf, impactful packaging and graphic design is critical.”

“We want companies to be able to easily create eye-catching designs in line with their own brand objectives. Domino helps brands quickly respond to current consumer trends and create the ‘Wow’ factor at lower cost.”

Amazon replaces plastic air pillows in US packaging

Amazon has announced it has replaced 95% of the plastic air pillows from its delivery packaging in North America with paper filler.

The company has said this move will help it avoid nearly 15 billion plastic air pillows annually.

To facilitate the transition, Amazon’s teams worked closely with suppliers to procure paper which it claims is made “entirely from recycled content”. This initiative was implemented across various fulfilment centres, where the company said it supported employees in adapting machinery and conducted comprehensive training sessions for the new systems and equipment.

Pat Lindner, vice president of mechatronics and sustainable packaging at Amazon, said: “I’m proud of the cross-Amazon collaboration to make a positive impact on the customer delivery experience with easier to recycle materials. It’s a great example of how we thoughtfully test and scale new solutions to protect our customer experience.

“We are working towards full removal in North America by end of year and will continue to innovate, test, and scale in order to prioritise kerbside recyclable materials.”

Aldi trials paper-band banana packaging

Aldi has launched a trial initiative aimed at reducing plastic waste by eliminating plastic packaging from bananas in selected stores across regions including the North East, Yorkshire, the South West, the South East and the Midlands.

The supermarket chain, said to be ranked as the UK’s fourth-largest, is substituting its plastic bags with a paper band alternative on specific banana products, such as its Nature’s Pick five-pack, midi bananas and the Organic six-pack.

If successful, this move is projected to eliminate approximately 234 tonnes of plastic packaging annually. Aldi’s trial underscores its commitment to sustainability and marks a significant step towards reducing environmental impact within the retail sector.

Luke Emery, plastics and packaging director at Aldi, said: “At Aldi, we know how important reducing plastic is to our customers, colleagues and the future of the planet. We are constantly reviewing ways we can do this, and our latest trial on bananas is another great step on that journey.”
