NHS Tayside contract awarded to Keenan Recycling

Keenan Recycling has been awarded a food waste contract by NHS Tayside in Scotland.

The agreement will see the waste management company collecting and processing food waste generated by hospitals, clinics and community health centres.

Gary Mills, UK sales manager at Keenan Recycling, celebrated the contract: “We are thrilled to collaborate with NHS Tayside, a pioneer in healthcare delivery. By working together, we can make a significant impact on reducing food waste and promoting a more sustainable healthcare system.”

The NHS Tayside is a healthcare board that provides services to Angus, Dundee City, and Perth and Kinross which serves over 400,000 people. Its headquarters are located in Ninewells Hospital.

Amcor’s Winterbourne site achieves ISCC+ certification

Amcor’s Winterbourne site in Birmingham has received its ISCC+ Certification – bringing the packaging company’s total number of certified sites to 27.

The certification aims to create a framework that makes it easier to use recycled and bio-based content, and to verify associated claims.

The Winterbourne site primarily produces packaging for the healthcare sector.

“This certification reaffirms our commitment to increasing the use of bio-based and recycled content in our production,” said Virginie Maes, vice president of global flexibles healthcare for Amcor. “The ISCC PLUS certification enables us to support our healthcare customers to strengthen their sustainability claims and increase the use of circular content in their packaging.”

Cherwell residents encouraged to recycle their metal packaging

The Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro) has partnered with Cherwell district council to launch its “MetalMatters” packaging recycling campaign to local residents.

The digital, postal and in-person campaign aims to teach residents more about the best way to recycle metal items, whether from the comfort of their homes or at their local household recycling centre.

Councillor Ian Middleton, portfolio holder for neighbourhood services at Cherwell district council, said: “Reduce, reuse and recycle is a key mantra at the heart of our priorities as a council and we know our residents do a brilliant job of recycling, but some may not know that there is one common household material that is 100% recyclable – metal.

“While we have seen some fantastic improvement in our recycling contamination rates, we really need to see more people putting their metal packaging in the blue bin instead of the green one. Recycling metal packaging is easy to do and brings many benefits. The energy saved by recycling just one aluminium can will power a TV for three hours. It shows that we can make a huge difference with one small action!”

Westbury Youth FC wins Sustainable Club Award

Westbury Youth Football Club has won the Sustainable Club of the Year Award at the Grassroots Football Excellence Awards for its “environmentally friendly” youth football tournament.

Waste at the tournament was managed by Hills Waste Solutions.

Neil Pollard, divisional director at Hills Waste Solutions, said: “We enjoyed supporting the Westbury Youth FC tournament.

“It was a busy weekend for the club with an expected 1300 players attending from the local community, so we hope to have alleviated some of the stress involved in managing event waste, allowing club officials, volunteers, coaches, supporters and players can all focus on and enjoy the games.”

The ceremony took place at the Village Hotel, Swindon on Friday 20 September.
