Police name woman killed in Biffa RCV incident

Police Scotland have confirmed the identity of a woman who died following a fatal road traffic incident involving a Biffa refuse collection vehicle in Edinburgh on 30 March 2018.

In a statement, the police said: “We can now confirm the identity of a woman who died following a fatal collision in the east of the city. She was Norah Beryl Poole, known as Norah, from Sheffield.

“The 90-year-old sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene after she was involved in a collision with a bin lorry on Piersfield Terrace, near to Northfield Broadway on Friday 30th March.”

In a statement, waste management company Biffa said: “We are providing all necessary support to the Police following a road traffic incident in Edinburgh on Friday morning. Our thoughts are with all parties involved or affected at this time.”

The police said the incident happened at around 11.30am on Friday 30 March on Piersfield Terrace near to Northfield Broadway with the lorry travelling eastbound in collision “with a 90-year-old female pedestrian who suffered fatal injuries and was sadly pronounced dead at the scene”.

In a statement released through Police Scotland, the deceased’s family said: “Beryl, Mum or Gran – was much loved by family and friends. She lived independently to the last, taking herself out most days, making full use of her free bus pass – Yorkshire lass that she was!2

Inquiries

Sergeant Ross Drummond from Police Scotland’s Road Policing Unit said: “Our inquiries into the full circumstances of the collision are ongoing and I would ask anyone who may have witnessed the collision, and has not yet spoken to officers, comes forward to assist with our investigations.

“Equally anyone with any information relevant to the inquiry is asked to contact us as soon as possible.”
