Hammersmith and Fulham adds eight electric cargo bikes

Hammersmith and Fulham council have added eight new electric cargo bikes to expand its fleet. Waste management services for the area are contracted to Veolia.

The fleet includes eight cargo, eight electric vans, three street cleansing cage vehicles and one Electric Refuse Collection Vehicle (eRCV). The latter will be used for its new garden waste collection service.

Veolia has said that it hopes the cargo bikes will improve service efficiencies due to being able to reach narrower routes such as the Thames Pathway, aiding the team to empty public litter bins and collect fly-tipped waste across the borough.

Additionally, the council and Veolia have said that the new bikes will help reduce the overall emissions of their fleet.

Councillor Sharon Holder, Hammersmith and Fulham cabinet member for public realm, said: “Our waste team continues to ensure [the council’s] parks and streets are safe and clean for residents, visitors and local wildlife. The new vehicles will help us go one step further as the waste team will now also be helping to reduce air pollution while they work.”

Scott Edgell, general manager for Veolia South London, added: “The new additions to the fleet will lower emissions and contribute towards Hammersmith and Fulham council’s target of net-zero emissions by 2030, as well as delivering an improved and streamlined service for Hammersmith and Fulham residents. We’re proud to be leading the way for innovative and sustainable operations.”

Garden waste and food waste services for Hammersmith and Fulham

The council has introduced a paid garden waste collection service which will see green waste taken for composting to be turned into fertiliser.

Since of the start of its contract in 2022, Veolia has also assisted in the introduction of food waste services for more than 50,000 households in the borough and the delivery of wheeled bins for recycling and waste to 16,000 kerbside properties.
