The Energy from Waste (EfW) company saw a total export volume of 364,581 tonnes – a year-on-year growth of 23%.
Geminor currently exports RDF to multiple energy plants throughout Europe alongside supplying the fuel to local UK customers.
The company attributed “strong long-term partnerships” in Sweden and Denmark to its growth – both markets grew by 28% and 21% respectively last year. This was accompanied by a continuing “stable presence” in Norway throughout 2024 and an expansion into Finland.
Across the 12 months, Geminor managed a total of 645,947 tonnes of waste, including 90,000 tonnes from Ireland. 364,581 tonnes was exported to European markets while the remaining 191,366 were sold domestically.
Oliver Caunce, country manager for the UK at Geminor, commented: “We are very pleased to stay ahead of the competition. Our diverse export destinations and stable partnerships ensure that we remain the UK’s largest exporter and a trusted provider for our clients, adapting to their needs in an evolving market.”
Geminor issues warning ahead of 2025/2026
The EfW company has issued a warning ahead of what it described as “significant changes” hitting the RDF market in 2025 and 2026.
The government’s landfill tax increase will also arrive in April 2025. Geminor cautioned that the tax will likely shift waste streams towards “energy recovery solutions” such as RDF exports.
At the same time, the company warned that the increased domestic EfW capacity and “emerging carbon costs” will create uncertainty for the market.
The UK is expected to see approximately five million tonnes of new incineration capacity come online in the two-year period.
Kjetil Vikingstad, founder and principal owner of Geminor, concluded: “We serve multiple upstream markets in Europe and believe that the UK will remain a stable market for RDF exports.
“However, if the UK market shifts towards more domestic solutions on waste to energy, we are well-prepared to replace diminished UK RDF export with other upstream markets where demand for outlets for RDF remains strong.”
