Flintshire council to introduce charges for non-household waste

Flintshire council has announced that it will be introducing new charges for non-household waste items at its Household Recycling Centres (HRCs) from 5 August 2024.

Residents will be charges for asbestos, motor oil, plasterboard and tyres.

The council says that the charge will cover ‘the significant cost’ associated with accepting these items.

Residents will have to book and pay online in advance to dispose of these items. Prices are as follows:

Waste type Cost
Asbestos (Must be in red bags which can be collected from Flintshire Connects centres using your booking reference). £20 per bag (Maximum five bags per booking)
Motor oil £5 per visit (Maximum 10 litres per visit)
Plasterboard £5 per bag / £30 per trailer (unbagged plasterboard)
Tyres – domestic, vehicles, motorbikes £5 per tyre (Maximum four tyres per booking)

‘Non-household items cost the council a significant amount of money’

Councillor Dave Hughes, cabinet member for streetscene and transportation, said: “We are constantly looking for cost-effective ways to operate while still providing a good quality service for residents.

“These non-household items cost the council a significant amount of money to dispose of each year. We will be able to offset these costs by introducing a small fee which can be paid online.”

Other changes to waste services

The proposal was approved by full council on 20 February 2024, as part of its budget setting agenda which included further changes to the provision of HRCs in Flintshire in a bid to set a balanced budget.

Other changes to HRCs include reduced opening hours and the creation of a trade waste and recycling facility.

In August, Flintshire county council  will also be launching a new trade waste and recycling service.

The service follows the introduction from the Welsh g overnment of new workplace recycling regulations which allow for chargeable waste and recycling services to local businesses. This not only includes kerbside business collections, but paid access to the Greenfield Recycling Centre.
