Fire extinguished at Sutton Courtenay landfill

Thames Valley Police advised Didcot residents to keep their windows closed last night (31 March) due to what they described as “an unpleasant smell” after a fire broke out at the Sutton Courtenay landfill site. The fire was fully extinguished today.

Oxfordshire county council’s Fire and Rescue Service told letsrecycle.com they first received a call about a fire at FCC Environment’s active landfill, near Didcot, just after 9pm last night.

Eight fire engines attended the scene alongside water carriers. Through the night, fire engines from The Slade, Carterton, Goring, Wheatley, and Thame relieved the initial attending crews and “worked to resolve the incident”, the fire service said.

At its height, there were around 16 crews in attendance.

Thames Valley Police, who attended the scene along with the Environment Agency, advised Didcot residents to remain inside for the evening due to the smoke and the odour.

The blaze was “largely extinguished” by daybreak, the fire service said, and the site handed back to staff at around 11am today.

The fire service believes the cause of the fire to be accidental. Nobody was reported to be injured at the scene.

FCC told letsrecycle.com that the landfill site had reopened as normal as of 7am this morning.

The waste management company said it would continue to monitor the site over the next few days despite the fire being fully extinguished.

A spokesperson said: “On 31 March, Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Services attended a fire at Sutton Courtenay landfill site, near Didcot, Oxfordshire.

“The fire was quickly brought under control and put out, and the site is back open as this morning.

“We would like to thank Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Services for their quick response to this incident.”
