Euston station ‘on track’ to hit recycling target

Euston station is celebrating efforts made by its passengers and colleagues towards its recycling goals in honour of Global Recycling Day today (18 March 2025).

The station aimed to recycle over 1,500 tonnes of waste over a 12-month period -from March 2024 to March 2025 – in an effort to reduce its carbon footprint and support Network Rail’s commitment to sustainability. It said that it is “on track” to hit the target.

Euston’s dedicated waste management facility is operated by Mitie and processes all waste generated at the station.

Other achievements being celebrated by the station, Network Rail and Mitie include:

  • A 71% boost in recycling rates at Euston station.
  • A 70% reduction in waste collections, saving time, resources, and emissions.
  • CO2 savings of 11,242.4 tonnes annually, contributing to the UK’s sustainability goals.
  • Generating revenue from saleable recycled materials, offsetting the costs of staffing at the recycling centre.
  • Created ten full time positions at Mitie.

Robert Williamson, head of stations and passenger experience at London Euston station, said: “Our waste management facility is continuing to make a real difference in improving recycling rates and reducing our environmental impact here at Euston.

“Global Recycling Day is the perfect opportunity to reflect on our latest recycling stats and I want to say a huge thanks to our waste management team at Mitie who work tirelessly every day, as well as our passengers for their support in helping us make the station greener.”

Samuel Omojola, operations manager for Mitie Transport, cleaning & hygiene services at London Euston station, added: “Partnering with Network Rail at London Euston has allowed us to transform waste management into a powerful tool for sustainability. Our innovative facility not only boosts recycling rates but also reflects our commitment to driving positive environmental change.

“On Global Recycling Day, we’re proud to celebrate these achievements and inspire greater environmental responsibility in the railway industry.”
