On the first day of the event on 13 September, the company launched the solar powered bins which feature an automatic compactor that aims to reduce street litter collections by 90% as well as solar powered benches and picnic tables.
According to ESF all of its new collection is made from Plaswood, a recycled plastic material from Berry Global and licensed by the Made in Britain Trade mark.
John Pearce, Made in Britain chief executive, said: “This collection combines British manufacturing innovation with the communication of vital messages around circularity, which have the potential to educate and empower young minds by the way of the beloved Wombles.”
The Wombles
First aired in 1973 The Wombles is about a group of secretive creatures who live beneath Wimbledon Common. Their adventures involved recycling and reusing discarded things left behind by humans on the common. In 2020 the characters were brought out of hibernation to inspire a new generation to reuse and recycle.
Proud Moment
Alan Lowry, managing director of ESF said: “Getting the opportunity to launch The Wombles Collection by ESF to a global audience as the show celebrates its 50th anniversary is a very proud moment for our company. The Wombles were a staple part of my childhood and I know that through the launch of this collection, many other people will be transported back to their early days.
“Aside from the nostalgic aspect of the collection, primarily we want to continue to promote the message the show is renowned for- encouraging recycling, reducing waste, upcycling items and making good use of bad rubbish.”
He added: “Now more so than ever when the green and circular economies are to the fore, its important that we maximise the opportunities for people to recycle and reduce littering, contributing to a low carbon economy.”
RWM
The launch was fitting because the show was lucky to receive a visit from the Wombles themselves. With the characters popping up throughout the two day event.
