Air monitoring system created for refuse vehicles
Amid growing concern over air pollution, CMS SupaTrak has teamed up with air monitoring specialist EarthSense to launch a mobile air monitoring system for refuse vehicles.
The vehicle telematics specialist has become a distributor for EarthSense’s Zephyr air quality sensors across the UK, France and Germany.
The system samples air quality every 10 seconds and unlike static monitors, can provide measurements across a large geographical area every day. It allows users to understand how air pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide behave in constantly evolving urban environments.
Vehicle manufacturer Dennis Eagle has fitted the mobile device to a demonstration refuse collection vehicle and are involved in a project with the City of London Corporation which runs a fleet of around 150 cleansing and waste collection vehicles.
Vince Dignam, business performance & transport manager for the City of London, said: “We will collect data on Euro 5, Euro 6 and our EV vehicles to help us better understand the impact on air quality of these different vehicle types.”
CMS SupaTrak managing director, Jason Airey, said: “We are very excited to be working with EarthSense for our waste sector customers, enabling us to help monitor air quality across the UK and Europe. Working with other partners we hope to develop a number of interventions to reduce pollution”.
Wood recycler chooses HAAS pre-shredder
Wood recycling company RTD Crawford Ltd has invested in a pre-shredder from German manufacturer HAAS.
The Northern Irish company processes 250 tonnes of grade A and 200 tonnes of grade B waste wood per week at its site near Belfast harbour, sending it on for use in the sawmill and biomass respectively.
At the site, the company already operates a HAAS recycling line including a slow-speed shredder, hammermill, oscillating screens and various magnets and eddy current separators. However, the pre-shredder it used to break down material before hand was ageing and was in need of replacement.
Equipment suppliers CRJ Services suggested that the HAAS TYRON 2000XL 2.0 would meet their operational and economical requirements.
Mark Crawford, director at RTD Crawford, said: “After investigating the market, we settled on the HAAS Tyron mainly for its compact size and ease of manoeuvrability over its competitors. We also have found the Tyron very economical to run.”
Dennis Eagle to open service centre in Scotland
A new service centre for Dennis Eagle customers in Scotland is set to open in September as part of the company’s ongoing investment in the Scottish waste and recycling industry.
The premises will be centrally located in Cumbernauld, between Glasgow and Edinburgh, just off the M80 motorway. The refuse collection vehicle manufacturer said it would replace the service centre at Falkirk with a larger, more modern facility including a bigger workshop and warehouse, training facilities and conference rooms.
The warehouse will carry greater stock than before and enable Dennis Eagle to offer a same-day-delivery service to our customers. There will also be a collection point for those wanting to pick up parts themselves.
Dennis Eagle aftermarket director, Geoff Rigg, said: “We’re constantly striving to improve our levels of customer service and that is the whole focus of the new Cumbernauld facility. It will be totally geared up to meet our customers’ needs, from getting the vehicles back on the road even quicker than before to providing better training facilities.
“It couldn’t be better located, with easy access to the central motorway network in Scotland and fully dedicated to the service, repair and maintenance of refuse collection vehicles.”
On 12 September 2019, a Customer Open Day is being held at the new Cumbernauld Service Centre at Unit 68, Westfield North Industrial Estate, Grayhills Road, Cumbernauld, G68 9HQ.
Geoff Rigg added: “We’re offering an open invitation to any operators in the waste management industry to come along and see what we have to offer. We’ll also have a selection of our demonstration vehicles there. And we’ll be contacting our customers to invite them personally nearer the time.”

Highlander invests in JCB forklift trucks
Scottish paper recycler Highlander International Recycling has invested in eight forklift trucks from equipment manufacturer JCB.
The Teletruks—all diesel-powered and predominantly 3.5 tonne capacity models—are used to unload curtain-sided and other vehicles and deliver waste paper directly for processing.
Started in 2002 and based in East Kilbride, Highlander International Recycling processes over 22 grades of waste paper and currently recycles 1,000 tonnes of fibre a week.
Paul Murray, JCB’s Teletruk general manager, said: “The Teletruk is perfect for Highlander. Its high capacity at reach allows single side loading or unloading of curtain-sided trailers or flat-bed trucks – functionality that, effectively, means that less trucks are required, the yard space required to carry out the loading/unloading task is halved and the time taken to perform the process is reduced.”
Highlander International’s Brian Bingham added: “The Teletruk allows us to load and unload more quickly and safely than any equivalent machine on the market and is vital to our ongoing success.”
The Teletruks were supplied by local JCB dealer Scot JCB which also provides ongoing maintenance and after-sales support.
