Currys and Deloitte launch WEEE recycling campaign

A new “Recycle for Good” campaign to encourage the recycling of old technology and electricals has been launched by Deloitte and Currys.

Research by Deloitte found that 59% of consumers said that they are “more committed” to reducing their waste than the year before.

The campaign will encourage members of the public to recycle their Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) into Currys stores to be recycled for free through its “Cash for Trash” programme and trade-in scheme.

In return, customers will receive at least a £5 Currys voucher, regardless of where and when the tech was originally purchased.

Lindsay Haselhurst, COO at Currys, said: “We are so excited to work with Deloitte on their important ‘Recycle for Good’ initiative. At Currys, we are committed to reducing e-waste and educating customers on how to dispose their unwanted tech, responsibly.

“Through our well established ‘Cash for Trash’ and trade-in programmes, we offer a convenient solution for Deloitte colleagues, to recycle their old tech and contribute to combatting the e-waste crisis.”

Currys will sell any of the collected WEEE that is reusable back to Deloitte to be donated through its device donation scheme. Deloitte currently runs a programme through which the firm’s retired laptops are either recycled or donated to charities and schools. The programme has seen over 17,500 refurbished laptops given to those who need them.

Richard Houston, Deloitte UK senior partner and CEO, added: “Our ‘Recycle for Good’ initiative with Currys allows us to turn old tech into new opportunities, ensuring that valuable devices don’t go to waste. Access to technology changes lives and by simply recycling their old tech, our colleagues are making a real difference to bridge the digital divide.”

According to research by Material Focus, around one in two UK adults find recycling small electrical difficult.

Executive director of Material Focus, Scott Butler, explained: “Our research has shown that the average household is holding onto nearly 10 unused tech items including mobile phones, laptops, iPads and games consoles.

“Unwanted tech, instead of being stashed unused in our homes can instead support those who have no access to technology. This initiative by Currys and Deloitte marks an important step towards a more inclusive and sustainable future.”
