The thinktank has been reformed following what the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) described as a “comprehensive review” led y its Trustee Board.
The review looked to redesign the forum’s structure to align with the CIWM’s strategic objectives and purpose to “move the world beyond waste”. A central focus was also to ensure that outputs are relevant and influential for and within the sector.
Marcus Gover, chair of the P&I Forum, explained: “In a period of unprecedented change and opportunities, our reset P&I Forum provides a crucial role for CIWM, the wider sector and beyond.

“From industry leaders to specialist academics, we are bringing together a wealth of expertise with a deep knowledge of innovative practices, in order to help shape progressive policy within resource and waste management, and identifying vital opportunities for us to move towards a low-carbon, resource-efficient, and more circular UK economy.”

Its first meeting took place on 12 March 2025. The CIWM said that highlights from the P&I Forum that the three-year workplan will be shard with members and stakeholders “in due course”.
Dr Adam Read, chief sustainability and external affairs officer at Suez and a member of the forum, reacted to the news: “This group combines the experience and vision necessary to shape the future of our sector and ensure that the CIWM is at the heart of both policy and practice.
“It will be a valuable resource to help the Circular Economy Taskforce to tackle short term priorities whilst also gearing up for the systemic changes needed in technology, policy and behaviour to successfully complete that journey.
