The council has just announced that in the first seven months of the current financial year it sold 999 composting bins, supplied by Original Organics.
The use of the bins, plus extra provision for green waste at civic amenity sites, is likely to see the recycling rate increase from last year’s 5.5% to a higher figure.
The composting figure has been produced after work by the South West Wales Home Composting Campaign which drew together councils from all over South West Wales, including Carmarthenshire County Council and original Organics at the beginning of the year to promote the recycling of compost at home.
The Campaign has collected figures from all counties in its area and Carmarthenshire has come out top of the league on home composter sales.
Councillor Pam Palmer, cabinet member for the environment, said: “I am thrilled with the level of participation in Carmarthenshire and I hope that we will see an increase in home composting in the future. Home composting is the single most effective action you can personally take to help the planet.”
The compost bins are priced at 12 and 14 and are dustbin shaped, fanning out at the bottom without a hatch.
Carmarthen is top of the league for composting in South West Wales
Carmarthenshire County Council is to delay introducing kerbside collection of recyclables from 2001 to 2002 because of budget constraints. But, success in green waste composting is likely to raise its recycling rate by about 2% this year.
