The Plastics 2020 Challenge, which is being sponsored by plastics trade associations, the British Plastics Federation (BPF), PlasticsEurope and the Packaging and Films Association (PAFA), is intended to engage ministers, MPs, the general public and the sector itself.

The campaign is aimed to improve understanding over environmental issues such as what materials are currently recycled and why and the role of plastics in energy from waste.

It is believed to be the first time as industry has sponsored such a wide-ranging debate.

Research is to be commissioned by London-based pollster ComRes, which will look to present new findings on key environmental issues. One of its main aims will be to look into issues such as recycling, energy recovery, and waste and resource efficiency.

In addition, the campaign will sponsor a website which will it claims will provide a “balanced and comprehensive” view about plastics, enabling society to make informed decisions related to plastics.
Further details of the campaign are to emerge in the next few months.

Peter Davis OBE, director general of the BPF, said: “We are delighted to be launching this unique and innovative campaign, which we hope will help contribute to a better understanding of plastics and what happens after we have used products and put them in the bin; and also encourage a big debate across a wide range of people with different views and perspectives.”
