The council has recorded a year-on-year increase to food waste recycling with an overall increase of 19% or 663.02 tonne since the launch of the trial.
The number of free food waste caddies requested by residents is also said to have increased. During the first half of the trial, requests for indoor caddies increased to 5,391 from 795 compared to the previous year. Outdoor caddy requests increased to 6,849 from 2,178.
The extended trial is part of the council’s Waste and Recycling Strategy to ensure Caerphilly meets and exceeds statutory recycling targets set by Welsh government.
‘Thrilled’
Councillor Chris Morgan, cabinet member of waste, leisure and green spaces, said: “We are thrilled to see the figures from the first year of our free caddy liner trial. Food waste currently makes up around 31% of our green general waste bins in the borough. If we could get all of this into the food waste caddy, it would have a huge effect on our recycling rates and the environment.
“A big thank you to all our residents who have made the trial a huge success. Please continue to reduce food waste wherever you can and where this isn’t possible, always recycle.”
Residents can collect free indoor food waste caddy liners from local libraries, leisure centres, Bedwas Council Chambers, Penallta House, Machen RFC, Blackwood Town Council and Penallta Reuse Shop.
