The councils, which have decided to either extend or roll over their contracts, include Isle of Anglesey county council, Conwy county borough council, Stratford-on-Avon district council, Norwich city council, East Lothain council and Kent county council.
The Anglesey contract has been rolled over for a further seven years, with Biffa continuing to provide alternate week collections of refuse and green waste effective from March 2021.
And, on the Welsh mainland, Conwy has agreed a two year extension of Biffas green waste collection contract from December 1 2014.
Meanwhile, Biffa has similarly secured three more seven-year extensions for refuse and recycling collection services in Norwich city council from April 2017, and Stratford-on-Avon from August 2015, where a new kerbside collection for WEEE, household batteries and textiles will also be introduced.
Elsewhere, East Lothian council has rolled over Biffas contract for four more years with effect from September this year, continuing Biffas fortnightly collections of dual stream recyclables from around 46,000 properties, while Kent county council has backed a 12 month service extension for the management of eight household waste recycling centres (HWRCs) across the county.
Finally, the division is also successfully retendering for management of a pair of HWRCs for a further two years for Vale of Glamorgan council in south Wales.
‘Good news’
Pete Dickson, Biffa municipal development director, described the contract extensions and retender success as good news for councils, residents and the waste management company.
He said: Our commitment to high service standards, and to maximising efforts to reduce waste and costs, have been rewarded by these authorities. They have seen just what can be achieved when council, contractor and residents work together to recycle more.
The challenge ahead is to expand recycling even further while controlling costs, and we look forward to fulfilling these councils faith in Biffa.

Earlier this year, Biffa rolled out recycling, refuse and green waste collections in Crawley, West Sussex, as part of a new 12 million contract with the borough council (see letsrecycle.com story).
According to the council, the seven-year contract will save taxpayers 2.8 million over its lifetime and includes the option to extend for a further three years to 2024.
