Beverage carton alliance forms in Brussels

The Alliance of Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE) has merged with EXTR:ACT to create the Food and Beverage Carton Alliance (FBCA).  

The FBCA said that it aims to unite beverage carton manufacturers and their paperboard suppliers to drive sustainable packaging solutions and the industry’s work in ensuring they are collected and recycled. 

The five founding members of the alliance are Billerud, Elopak, SIG, Stora and Tetra Pak.  

Patrick Verhelst, president of the FBCA Board, said: “Our industry is working tirelessly in designing fully renewable and sustainable packaging solutions that meet the needs of both consumers and the planet. 

“We are excited to expand globally and champion the role of beverage cartons in building a more resilient, low-carbon future.” 

The full board includes:  

  • Patrick Verhelst, president FBCA and senior director of business development of Elopak; 
  • Ulrika Wedberg, vice president FBCA and executive vice-president of sustainability and public affairs at Billerud; 
  • Karina Boers, head of sustainability development at SIG; 
  • Tamara Bullock, director of corporate affairs (Europe and Americas) at Tetra Pak 
  • Erik Hallberg, vice-president of coating, converting and digital technology and Stora 

Annick Carpentier, FBCA executive director of global advocacy, added: “Through FBCA’s Global Centres of xpertise, Advocacy and Communications, we will provide the evidence and benchmarks needed to lead the way in sustainability progress. 

“We look forward to working with global partners in driving a circular bioeconomy, maximising functionality and efficiency along the life cycle.” 

The association will be based in Brussels, Belgium.  

EXTR:ACT was originally formed to be a European platform for improving and increasing the recycling of beverage cartons.
