– Lord Rooker
The three-year Community Waste Innovation Fund, announced by Northern Ireland environment minister Jeff Rooker today, is being shared between 15 voluntary or community-based organisations.
Lord Rooker said: “This fund will bring together people from all walks of life with a single goal of making a difference to the environment, through minimising Northern Ireland's waste.”
The funding includes 100,000 towards a new cooking oil recycling plant, 450,000 towards a new electronics recycling plant, 266,867 towards a household composting scheme and 425,392 for a primary school waste education programme.
Programmes
Lord Rooker said: “We have education and awareness programmes being developed alongside community recycling schemes, and even a waste vegetable oil recycling facility. Accessible outlets for the collection and re-sale of bulkier goods will allow more waste to be reused.”
“What's more, these are inclusive projects, taking in economically vulnerable areas and special interest groups.”
Beneficiaries of the funding include Oxfam Northern Ireland, Bryson House – the charity that works with London firm ECT Recycling in Northern Irish recycling activities.
