The group said that the move forms part of its growth plan to “strengthen its base in Cumbria and regionalise its business across the north of England”. 
The new site is in close proximity to its existing sites and is expected to be operational immediately. The waste group operates across Cumbria, the North East and Lancashire.
Derwent Recycling Services was founded in 2006 by Kevin Farrington who now jointly runs its two sites with his wife Claire.
Andy Chant, CEO of Cumbria Waste Group, commented: “I have known Kevin for many years and always held in high regard the business that he and Claire have built. It is compliant, delivers great service and the pride taken in the assets is second to none. These are the qualities that made it attractive for us and it adds significant additional capacity to our operations in West Cumbria.
“We are very excited to welcome the Derwent Team to our Group and gradually integrating the businesses over the coming months.”
Farrington added: “I am proud to have sold the business to Cumbria Waste Group.

Cumbria Waste Group was acquired by Waterland Private Equity in 2023 and is also supported by investment company Kartesia.
The group recently announced that it has been awarded the waste service contract for Metrocentre, Gateshead, one of the largest shopping centres in the UK.
