Go Plant Fleet Services, responsible for managing the specialised vehicle required for handling large skips at these sites, was acquired by Sweeptech in May 2024.
Consequently, the specialised vehicle was removed from service at the sites. The council has said that this has impacted its ability to maintain the service.
The affected recycling sites include:
- Cleator Moor Co-op
- Distington car park
- Gosforth car park
- Haverigg Foreshore
- Millom Tesco
- Seascale Foreshore
- St Bees Foreshore
- Whitehaven Morrisons
- Whitehaven Tesco
Services
Cumberland council has said it is seeking a replacement vehicle and is expected to resume full services within a couple of weeks.
In the interim, the council has stated that the Carlisle depot will assist in emptying some of the skips, though the council warned that not all the sites will be serviced.
Residents have been reminded not to leave items on the ground if skips were full, as this constitutes illegal dumping (fly-tipping).
Cumberland council has said it apologises for any inconvenience, stating it appreciates “residents’ cooperation” as it works to restore services.
The council encouraged residents to use local household waste recycling centres (HWRC) or their regular kerbside collection services if available.
