Valpak set to launch consumer website and looks ahead to vehicles directive

Valpak, the largest packaging waste compliance scheme, has confirmed it is looking beyond packaging and would like to be involved in a compliance system for end-of-life vehicles. And on the packaging side, it is soon expected to formally launch its recycle-more.co.uk website.

The website will give consumer information and and also encourage
businesses and organisations with packaging waste to sell it to Valpak. Companies such as
Coca Cola are expected to endorse the cartoon character featured in the recycle-more
campaign.

Aside from packaging, in an exclusive interview with letsrecycle.com, Valpak chief
executive John Turner said that the compliance scheme is well aware that packaging is
only one area in which producer responsibility is being introduced and that his team
are closely monitoring other directives including the one covering end-of-life vehicles
(ELVs).

With the government is in the process of working out how it will be
implemented in the UK Valpak Mr Turner is clear that Valpak sees involvement with
the ELV directive as a natural progression of its current activities.

The concept of Valpak playing part in vehicles compliance is within the
feature

Valpak looks beyond packaging success,
where Mr Turner is
clear about the opportunity: “There is a directive in position. Now this government
has by 2002 to get the regulations together and this is nothing different from what we
do with packaging.

“This could involve a VRN,” he adds, explaining that as industry and
government go through the process of looking at the directive, a close look is being
paid to how the system would be funded.

“Somehow or other the extra costs of stripping vehicles would have to be
met and car companies are trying to get to grips with the issue.”
