Consultation is being carried out now by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport which controls the fund over how exactly up to £50 million will be managed and allocated.
Because the Department has little experience of recycling and composting work it may decide to appoint groups and organisations experienced in the sector to take on a managerial type of role. This is where the the CRN might be able to play a part in helping to disburse part of the money for community recycling and composting.
With composting likely to receive particular focus as a quick way to drive up recycling rates, the CRN is also currently working on plans to strengthen its composting activities alongside its recycling work.
CRN business manager Joe Papineschi, confirmed that the group is very keen to be involved with the fund but emphasised that the NoF project is still only at consultation stage. He added: “We are likely to put in a bid to administer a substantial part of the NoF programme.”
The CRN is a non-profit-making industrial and provident society and was formed by Friends of the Earth, becoming independent in 1992.
It is funded by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) through the Environmental Action Fund, and through the landfill tax credits scheme by SITA Environmental Trust and Viridor Waste Management. Last year CRN members provided kerbside multi-material collections to 1.2 million households and had a consolidated turnover of 40 million.
